Deltaville to Put In Creek off East River at Mathews, Virginia

The winds calmed down last evening and it was mirrorlike as we headed into the dinghy dock to dump garbage, fill up water jugs to top off the tank, and drop books off at the book exchange. This morning it was cool with low humidity as we headed out of Jackson Creek to the bay and turned south towards Wolf Trap Light, then turned into Mobjack Bay at New Point Comfort Light, and then up the East River to Put In Creek. We are anchored off Town Landing dock and it is a two-mile walk to Mathews. We can also dinghy up to Mathews at high tide in the morning to go to the diner for breakfast. We had a gentle rain all afternoon so it was nice sitting under the bimini on the flybridge.

On Tuesday morning we headed to Town Point dock to tie up the dinghy and then headed towards the highway into Mathews. There was a narrow shoulder but grassy sides to move over when traffic came and then a nice sidewalk that went all the way through historic downtown to Linda's Diner. This was the local spot and a great simple breakfast. We did our shopping at Ace, Dollar General, and the Food Lion before checking out the canoe launch dock at Put In Creek. There was a pretty park pavilion and nice public restrooms and cell phone service so we had a nice water break and we ended up hiking 6.8 miles. We bought a huge local cantaloupe from a farmer's truck and cut it up and had it for lunch. We did end up getting a short ride back once we got on the highway. It was a cool 63 degrees this morning and only a high of 80 degrees.

On Wednesday morning we dinghied up Put In Creek two hours before high tide and tied up at the kayak launch. We repeated our walk through town to Linda's Diner for their pancake breakfast. We remembered to restock our cash in our wallets. We made a quick stop at Food Lion and were back to the dock at high tide and did not bump on the way out like we did on the way in.

Piankatank River to Jackson Creek, Deltaville, Virginia

Last evening the rollers came in from the bay so at sunset after we heard the VHF weather alert, we moved the boat into Jackson Creek. We are anchored down from Jackson Creek Marina with three other sailboats.  We had a severe thunderstorm so we were glad to be in a protected anchorage. On Wednesday, we did some boat work and then went ashore in the late afternoon and paid our $5.00 dinghy fee, and walked through the woods to the Maritime Museum and then out to the major highway to the West Marine. We ordered our part and then headed towards the pizza place. We stopped in at the library and used their computer to do more online shopping. As it turns out all the restaurants are open Thursday through Sunday so it looked like a great spot to come back to.  On our return walk, we were offered a ride back to the marina and met a nice couple who gave us a rundown of the restaurants in town.

The only historic home in Deltaville is missing a historic downtown

On Thursday morning we dinghied into the marina around 6:30 am and walked to the Cafe by the Bay. We enjoyed a breakfast panini and coffee on their deck. We walked to the True Value Hardware Store and found our two-step folding step stool for the boat. The real heat wave starts today and through Saturday. After relaxing in the breeze on the flybridge, we walked the Holly Nature Trail to the Maritime Museum to check out fees and opening times for a future visit. We then walked to the DeltaPie Pizzeria for an outstanding brick-fired pizza and beer.  Since Nauti Nells was across the street, we stopped at the gift shop and marine consignment shop to browse.  Our last stop was at the library to cool off and search the internet. Now back to the boat to try to chill in the 91-degree heat.

Friday morning we were up at 6:30 am to beat the heat to walk to breakfast at Cafe on the Bay. We then headed with our wine bags to Deltaville Market IGA and passed the ABC Liquor Store on the way and decided to come back at 10 m when it opened. In between we went to the produce market but nothing warranted hauling it back. The liquor store only had Virginia Wines so we walked back to the grocery store. We got one offer of a ride when we weren't ready to go and then a boatyard guy stopped and took us back to the library where we enjoyed the cool AC and did more online shopping. We then got an offer of a ride from the cafe waitress back to the marina so we ended up doing about 5 miles. Last evening we kept misting ourselves with a spray bottle that worked to cool us off in the breeze. Sleeping was fine even though it only got down to 81 the hottest so far.

On Saturday, we were up early again for our walk to Cafe on the Bay. On the way back we stopped at the convenience store across from turn to the marina to check out their beer selection. We took the boat into the fuel dock for water, pump-out, and water as the marina is only open until noon on Saturday and closed on Sunday, We spent a lazy day watching the sand bar at the entrance of Jackson Creek fill up with local boaters wading and swimming in the shallows. We headed into town planning on going to the Table for dinner but ended up at Deltapie for a pizza before heading to the Deltas baseball game. We got there just in time for the start and we did get one home run against Richmond before we left after the fifth inning We got back to the boat just as lightning started and the rains came so perfect timing. This front should bring cooler weather.

On Sunday morning we walked to The Table Restaurant for their brunch which was excellent. We also bought a round loaf of their artisan bread. It was a cooler day so we spent the afternoon doing boat projects and getting ready to leave in the morning.

Reedville to Godfrey Bay in Piankatank River, Deltaville, Virginia

The courteous waterman went slowly past us before daybreak but it was enough wake to awaken us anyway. We cruised out the Great Wicomico River into the bay and south past Sting Ray Point to the Piankatank River. We spotted an anchorage across from Fishing Bay in Godfrey Bay along a deserted beach where we anchored and cooked breakfast. We are across from the entrance to Jackson Creek and Deltaville Marina and Boatyard. The wind picks up the next couple of days so we decided we would check out the facilities here and be able to walk the town and see what has changed since we were here last. We dinghied into Jackson Creek Marina, the old Deltaville Marina to check on our dockage and boatyard work order and went through the twisty markers at the entrance to Jackson Creek. We then dinghied over to the Maritime Museum and checked out the dinghy dock planning to return another day. The wind had picked up as predicted and it was a bouncy ride back.

Heathsville to Seaboard anchorage in Reedville, Virginia

We had a quiet evening with a nice breeze off Sandy Point anchorage on the Great Wicomico. We returned to anchor near the Reedville Market in Reedville across from Cockrell Creek Deli. We planned to eat lunch at Leadbellies Restaurant at Fairport Marina in Reedville. Yet again information was wrong on the website and all four restaurants and the ice cream shop were closed on Monday. We headed back to the boat for lunch and then dinghied over to Reedville Market dock and tied up and walked the town. We wandered around the Fisherman's Museum as most places were only open Thursday-Sunday as we have found along the bay. We cruised around the creeks in the dinghy as we watched two huge fishing fleet boats come into the creeks on both sides of us and unload their catch.
